Antimony, a critical metalloid primarily sourced from the mineral stibnite, is highly valuable for its versatility and essential applications across industrial, defence and technological sectors.
Due to its limited supply, antimony is considered a strategic material essential for maintaining defense capabilities, especially during periods of geopolitical instability.
The US, EU, UK, Japan and Australia all designate antimony as a critical mineral.
China dominates the global production and supply of antimony and in August 2024, announced the implementation of export controls on processed antimony products. This development has prompted nations to accelerate their efforts to secure alternative sources of antimony to mitigate the risk of significant supply chain vulnerabilities.
Reflecting heightened demand, the price of antimony reached a record high of over US$30,000 per tonne in October 2024, a significant increase from US$12,000 per tonne when Larvotto acquired the Hillgrove project. This market shift has intensified interest in the strategic antimony resources Larvotto holds at Hillgrove.
When in production, Hillgrove will make a substantial impact on global supply, with Larvotto aiming to produce 5,400 tonnes annually, representing 7% of the total worldwide production.
